Paris/Rüsselsheim. Opel/Vauxhall opens the Paris Car Show (October 2 – 17) with the unveiling of the sporty concept GTC Paris and the premiere of the new station wagon version of the Astra, the Sports Tourer.
“We are progressing swiftly with our growth plan. Today we have the best product portfolio ever. And we’re just getting started,” Opel/Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly said at the company’s press conference at the Opel stand in Hall 5.2
Reilly pointed to the company’s product offensive and simultaneous investments at its manufacturing plants as proof that Opel/Vauxhall is moving ahead with high speed. Over the last few weeks, the company has announced expansions of plants in Kaiserslautern, Germany and Szentgotthard, Hungary, where particularly efficient and powerful engines will be built. The plant in Eisenach, Germany will begin building a small car starting in 2013, marking Opel/Vauxhall’s entry to a new market segment.
“We said at the beginning of this year that we would be investing 11 billion euros in new products and that we would be updating our entire portfolio. We stand behind our words and have started to deliver on that very commitment,” Reilly said. Expanding into new export markets was another important element of Opel/Vauxhall’s growth plan, he added. “Israel and Chile have already been announced – and there are more to come.”
Excellent customer response to current vehicles like the Insignia, Astra and Meriva show that the company is on the right path. The new Astra five-door hatchback, launched at the end of last year, has received more than 200,000 orders – some 20,000 more than originally planned for the entire year. The new Meriva, with its innovative doors, has already conquered its market segment of the small monocabs, with 70,000 orders received so far – well-exceeding Opel/Vauxhall’s annual sales target of between 40,000 and 50,000.
With the particularly striking GTC Paris concept, Opel/Vauxhall is showing just how much substance its new design language has. At the same time, the concept car features innovative technology, like a two-liter turbo gasoline engine with direct injection and a new generation of the adaptive FlexRide chassis. A second highlight of the show is the Astra Sports Tourer, combining great design with functionality and a load capacity of 1550 liters.
A particularly frugal ecoFLEX model in each range is available for customers who are especially conscious of the environment. Start/Stop systems are now being introduced successively, starting with the Agila and Corsa.
Another major theme at the car show in Paris is once again electric mobility – here, too, Opel will be a trendsetter in the coming year with the market introduction of the Ampera. The electric vehicle has a revolutionary propulsion system, which, thanks to a range extender, gives drivers the peace of mind that they won’t be stranded due to a flat battery.
